2024 Tax Deadline Extended for Disaster-Affected Areas

If you live in one of the states or counties recently affected by a natural disaster, you may have more time to file and pay your 2024 taxes.

The IRS has announced automatic extensions for many taxpayers in specific areas. This means you do not need to file any forms to get the extension—it’s automatic.

Who qualifies for the extended deadline?

Taxpayers in the following areas now have until Thursday, May 1, 2025, to file their federal tax returns and make any payments originally due on April 15, 2025:

  • Alabama – All taxpayers

  • Florida – All taxpayers

  • Georgia – All taxpayers

  • North Carolina – All taxpayers

  • South Carolina – All taxpayers

  • Alaska – Only taxpayers in the City and Borough of Juneau

  • New Mexico – Only taxpayers in Chaves County

  • Tennessee – Only taxpayers in:

    • Carter, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Greene, Hamblen, Hancock, Hawkins, Jefferson, Johnson, Sevier, Sullivan, Unicoi, and Washington counties

  • Virginia – Only taxpayers in:

    • Albemarle, Appomattox, Bedford, Bland, Botetourt, Bristol City, Buchanan, Buckingham, Carroll, Charlotte, Covington City, Craig, Danville City, Dickenson, Floyd, Galax City, Giles, Grayson, Greene, Lee, Madison, Montgomery, Nelson, Norton City, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Pulaski, Radford City, Roanoke City, Roanoke, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise, and Wythe counties

Other extended deadlines:

  • California – Taxpayers in Los Angeles County have until October 15, 2025 due to the wildfires in January.

  • Kentucky – All taxpayers in the entire state have until November 3, 2025.

  • West Virginia – Taxpayers in these counties have until November 3, 2025:

    • Boone, Greenbrier, Lincoln, Logan, McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, Monroe, Raleigh, Summers, Wayne, and Wyoming
